Eight Heating Tips for Holidays Help You Throw the Coziest Parties

We are in the midst of the holiday season! Now is the time of year for decorating your home, baking cookies and cooking decadent meals, and hosting friends and family. With all the traffic and merry making in your home, it’s doubly important that you have your heating under control during this season. Last month we covered how to maximize your HVAC system with Thanksgiving preparation tips. Today, we share eight heating tips for holidays for a house full of jolly.
- Check Filters – Before guests arrive, make sure you check and replace your HVAC filter. This will prepare your system to properly power enough heat to warm all those bodies and deal with the additional pollutants in the air.
- Clear the Way – Locate all heating devices and vents and clear the area of anything flammable. You should also leave at least two feet of space between the device and any other object. Keep an eye on giving these units adequate room as guests file in.
- Program Your Thermostat Accordingly – Ideally, you will use a programmable thermostat to assist with hosting groups of people. Adjust the thermostat to lower the temperature when you will be cooking or when your home will have more people in it. The more people in your home, the higher the temperature will rise, requiring you to keep lowering the thermostat.
- Add Blankets – Couches and sectionals tend to remain a little cooler than the general room temperature. Arrange blankets on these surfaces to keep them comfortable and warm for your guests.
- Use Your Fireplace – If you have a fireplace, take advantage of it. Not only does it spark a festive mood, but it also helps you save energy while keeping your guests toasty warm.
- Lock Windows – Seal in warm air and keep cool air from escaping, helping save energy and prevent a skyrocketing utility bill. With all the cold air out there, you do not want any drafts and chilliness ruining your party.
- Invest in a Whole-Home Humidifier – Not just for parties, a whole-home humidifier can also help your home retain heat after the crowds have dissipated. One of these devices allows you to set the thermostat lower, boosting comfort levels and helping your heating system not work quite so hard. It will also wring out any moisture to promote dry air and reduce static electricity.
- Go with Space Heaters – Space heaters are tried and true. Wherever there is a cooler part of your home, prop up a space heater to expel a little extra coziness. These heaters do not burn through too much energy but create plenty of heat to keep your guests happy.
