Are you ready for Turkey Day? At Gorman Mechanical, we sure are. And we would like to give you some of our favorite Thanksgiving preparation tips to help you get ready for the first of this season’s holidays. Whether you feel uncomfortable with your responsibility to host Thanksgiving dinner and need a little support or you are wondering what last-minute HVAC tweaks you can make to ensure your home is comfortable for your family, we hope you feel more confident after reading our list.
Make Great Plans – The last thing you want to do this Thanksgiving is wing it. Develop a menu for the core items (turkey, stuffing, ham) and then delegate the other dishes to your friends and family. You can arrange a pot-luck format for the other exciting sides (mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie) and remove the stress from your shoulders for planning an overwhelming meal for a dozen people.
Consolidate to the Indoors – You can still host your backyard family baseball game, of course, but try to keep the party mostly inside, especially if it’s a little cooler outside. You can keep your home heated more consistently during the holiday and minimize a higher November bill by planning games and activities inside, along with the meal.
Remember Your Filter – Remember to show your furnace filter a little love and thankfulness the day before. Change it right before you have the whole family over so the furnace can powerfully chug heat through your home all day, keeping everyone cozy and comfortable from the Macy’s Day Parade in the morning to watching the big game as you relax in a turkey coma. Swapping your filter will also help your house smell fresher right before everyone comes through the door.
Adjust Your Thermostat – If you are overwhelmed by the cost of cooking for and hosting Thanksgiving dinner, take heart that you can save a little money on the big day by adjusting your thermostat. With all the people in your home and your oven working overtime, you can turn down your thermostat that day and still keep everyone warm and happy. If you need a little extra heat throughout the day, consider plugging in a space heater for a short period of time.
Stay Relaxed and Have Fun – The most important part of Thanksgiving is always spending time with your family and friends. Beyond the meal planning, decorating, game playing, and football watching, always remember to enjoy yourself and stay relaxed. Wear stretchy pants to allow for extra pie, crack a smile, and sit back and watch everyone appreciate your party planning handywork.
